Theme Analysis

To be a true Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava means to follow exactly in the footprints of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Caitanya appeared not only as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but in the mood of a perfect devotee, to personally teach the conditioned souls how to approach Kṛṣṇa. The primary method He taught and exemplified was the constant, ecstatic chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra. Because the members of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement strictly follow this authorized process, their preaching retains the same transcendental potency today as it had five hundred years ago.

A vital theme Śrīla Prabhupāda stresses throughout this category is the absolute difference between following and imitating. We cannot imitate Lord Caitanya's unparalleled feelings of separation from Kṛṣṇa or His profound ecstasies. Attempting to do so leads to the path of the sahajiyās (cheap imitators). Instead, we must follow His practical instructions: chanting sixteen rounds, adopting a mood of extreme tolerance and humility, and enthusiastically preaching the holy name across the globe. By following in His footsteps—and the footsteps of His direct representatives, the Six Gosvāmīs of Vṛndāvana—anyone, regardless of their background or birth in foreign lands, can achieve the ultimate perfection of Goloka Vṛndāvana.

  • The Authorized Process: Lord Caitanya specifically chanted the sixteen-word Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra. By following in His footsteps and chanting exactly as He did, the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement retains its immense spiritual potency.
  • Following vs. Imitating: Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly warns against imitating Lord Caitanya's ecstatic symptoms. True followers (not mundane sahajiyās) follow His practical instructions and the principles established by the Six Gosvāmīs.
  • The Mood of a Preacher: Following Lord Caitanya means adopting His mood: being humbler than a blade of grass, more tolerant than a tree, and defeating opposing philosophical arguments with logic, reason, and scripture (as He did with the Chand Kazi).
  • Universal Deliverance: Because Lord Caitanya's mercy is universal, by following in His footsteps, the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is successfully turning people from all over the world into pure Vaiṣṇavas.
