Theme Analysis

Nārada Muni is celebrated throughout the Vedic literatures as the supreme transcendental spaceman and the original traveling preacher of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. As the spiritual master of Śrīla Vyāsadeva, he is a foundational pillar of the Brahma-Madhva-Gauḍīya sampradāya and one of the twelve mahājanas (great authorities). Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the primary duty of every pure Vaiṣṇava is to follow in the footsteps of Nārada Muni by constantly traveling and glorifying the Supreme Lord through the chanting of the holy names and the preaching of Bhagavad-gītā. By strictly following Nārada's example—remaining pure, rejecting the allurements of material sense gratification, and dedicating one's life to rescuing illusioned souls—a devotee can easily attain the same stage of eternal knowledge and bliss that Nārada Muni himself achieved.

  • The Original Authority: Nārada Muni is the spiritual master of Vyāsadeva, making him the original guru of the disciplic succession. One becomes an authority simply by strictly following his authorized instructions.
  • The Preaching Mission: The specific duty of a saintly person following Nārada Muni is to travel from village to village, country to country, to distribute Kṛṣṇa consciousness and save conditioned souls from karmic entanglement.
  • Glorification Through Kīrtana: Nārada Muni is eternally engaged in singing the glories of the Lord with his vīṇā. Followers in his line must similarly engage their time in the saṅkīrtana movement, chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra.
  • Attaining Eternal Bliss: By perfectly following the footsteps of this great sage, without any personal desire for sense gratification, anyone can attain the ultimate stage of pure devotion, eternal knowledge, and eternal bliss.
