Theme Analysis
The living entity, being a part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa, possesses a minute degree of free will. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while the Lord’s free will is supreme and independent, the living entity’s freedom is small and subordinate. The differences found in the material world—happiness and distress—are primarily due to the proper or improper use of this free will. When the soul chooses to compete with the Lord or act independently, it falls into the clutches of Māyā and becomes subject to the laws of material nature. This state of bondage is not ordained by God but is a self-created engagement arising from an abuse of freedom. Rather than attempting to stop or negate free will, as suggested by voidist or impersonal philosophies, the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement teaches the purification of free will through surrender. By choosing to serve the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the living entity is freed from all material bondage and reinstated in its original, blissful relationship with the Lord.
- The Distinction Between Minute and Supreme Will The living entity is atomic (anu), while the Lord is all-pervading (vibhu). Because the soul is a living being, it has the capacity to desire by its free will, but those desires can only be fulfilled by the omnipotent Lord. This relationship reflects the philosophy of simultaneously one and different, where the soul shares the quality of free will with Kṛṣṇa but in a limited capacity.
- The Abuse of Free Will and Material Bondage All material activities and their resultant happiness or unhappiness are self-created engagements arising from the misuse of free will. When a living entity desires to become the master rather than the servant, he falls into Māyā. These works are conditioned by the modes of nature, and the Supreme Lord has no involvement in such self-imposed bondage.
- Purification versus Negation of Will While some philosophies suggest stopping free will to find happiness, Kṛṣṇa consciousness emphasizes purifying it. In the neophyte stage, surrender involves following the directions of the spiritual master without independent decisions, but as one becomes trained, they automatically regain their spiritual freedom and align their will with the Lord.
- Transcendental Freedom of the Lord and His Devotees The Lord acts by His own free will and is never subject to the laws of the material world, even when He appears within it. Similarly, great devotees like Nārada Muni and Mahārāja Pṛthu exercise their free will to travel the universe for preaching or to give up the material body at their own discretion, showing that real freedom is found in the spiritual sky.
