Theme Analysis

Lord Gaṇeśa, the famous son of Lord Śiva and goddess Durgā, is celebrated in the Vedic literatures as the expert scribe who collaborated with Vyāsadeva to compile the Mahābhārata, and as the demigod who destroys obstacles on the path of progress. The Brahma-saṁhitā reveals that Gaṇeśa derives his power to remove impediments by constantly holding the lotus feet of Lord Govinda upon his elephant head. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while materialists and impersonalists often worship Gaṇeśa as part of the pañcopāsanā system—imagining him to be equal to Viṣṇu to fulfill material desires or facilitate mental speculation—pure devotees understand his actual position as an eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa. Because worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead automatically satisfies all other demigods, Śrīla Prabhupāda advises that separate Gaṇeśa pūjā is not required for Vaiṣṇavas. Instead, devotees honor Gaṇeśa for his own pure devotion to the Lord, beautifully illustrated by the fact that he dances in ecstasy alongside his father while witnessing Kṛṣṇa's rāsa-līlā.

  • The Eternal Servant of Govinda Although Gaṇeśa is highly venerated as the remover of obstacles and the scribe of the demigods, his actual position is that of a servant. He derives his extraordinary power simply by holding the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, the primeval Lord, upon his head.
  • Rejecting the Pañcopāsanā System Impersonalists and Māyāvādīs erroneously conclude that one can imagine any form of the Absolute Truth—such as Viṣṇu, Śiva, Durgā, Sūrya, or Gaṇeśa—and achieve the same result. Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly refutes this idea, emphasizing that only Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • The Fulfillment of All Desires People driven by the mode of passion often approach demigods like Gaṇeśa for material concessions. However, an intelligent person knows that all desired results can be achieved simultaneously and perfectly just by worshiping Lord Viṣṇu, the ultimate controller of all sacrifices.
  • The Vaiṣṇava Perspective on Gaṇeśa Pūjā Because worship of the Supreme Lord encompasses all subordinate entities, Śrīla Prabhupāda instructed his followers that separate worship of Gaṇeśa is not required. Vaiṣṇavas respect Gaṇeśa as a great devotee, appreciating his ecstatic participation in Kṛṣṇa's transcendental pastimes.
