Theme Analysis

The experience of giving trouble is an inherent feature of material existence, manifesting through the body, other living entities, and the laws of nature. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while the temporary material body and the threefold miseries constantly harass the conditioned soul, the root of this disturbance is the rebellious desire to lord it over nature. In this world, demons and godless leaders are characterized by their propensity to give trouble to the innocent and the devotees, yet such actions eventually invite the intervention of the Supreme Lord. Kṛṣṇa descends both to slay the demons giving trouble to His devotees and to provide the ultimate relief from material anxiety. Conversely, a pure devotee is defined by their desire not to give trouble to any living creature—including small bugs—and their refusal to even trouble the Lord for their own maintenance, accepting all relativities with tolerance and devotion.

  • The Inherent Suffering of the Material Body: The material body is a source of constant harassment. Whether through disease, old age, or the functions of the senses and organs, the temporary nature of the body ensures that it is always giving one trouble in many ways. This suffering is exacerbated when one acts solely for sense gratification.
  • Trouble from External Sources (Ādhibhautika): Living entities are frequently harassed by other creatures, ranging from subtle evil spirits and witches to common pests like mosquitoes and bedbugs. Additionally, godless heads of state and envious neighbors often plan ways to give trouble to the innocent and the saintly.
  • The Demoniac Mentality and Divine Intervention: It is the nature of demons to give devotees trouble, as seen in the histories of Prahlāda Mahārāja and Sītādevī. However, when such sinful activities culminate in giving trouble to the Lord's devotees, Kṛṣṇa or His incarnations like Nṛsiṁhadeva descend to kill the demons and restore peace.
  • The Devotee's Standard of Nonviolence and Tolerance: A Kṛṣṇa conscious person is trained to avoid giving unnecessary trouble to any living entity, even a small bug. Furthermore, a pure devotee does not want to give trouble to Kṛṣṇa even for their own maintenance, choosing instead to suffer material relativities patiently while remaining fixed in the Lord's service.
