Category:God's Back
Theme Analysis
The philosophical essence of this category explores the concept of the Supreme Personality of Godhead's "back" in two distinct ways: through the cosmological mapping of the universal form (Virāṭa-rūpa) and through His direct, transcendental pastimes. In the context of the universal form, the Lord's back represents the dark, frustrating elements of the material world. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while religion and piety are situated on the breast or front of the Lord, irreligion, immorality, and ignorance are situated on His back. Consequently, less intelligent philosophers who approach the Lord with frustration and ignorance are only able to see His back, resulting in a realization of the formless, impersonal void rather than His beautiful, personal face. However, when viewed through His pastimes, the Lord's back is a supreme instrument of salvation and pleasure. During the churning of the milk ocean, the Lord incarnated as a gigantic tortoise (Lord Kūrma) to hold the massive Mandara Mountain on His back. Because the Lord is unlimited, the crushing weight caused Him no inconvenience; instead, the churning motion simply provided a pleasing scratch for an itch on His transcendental back.
- The Seat of Irreligion: Within the conception of the universal form, every aspect of material existence maps to the Lord's body. Piety and religion represent the front, while irreligion, immorality, and ignorance are located on the Lord's back.
- The Impersonal Realization: Because the Lord is absolute, He is never a formless void. However, those who are frustrated by material life and lack pure devotion are kept on the "ignorance side" of the Lord, viewing Him from the back and thus realizing only His impersonal feature.
- Lord Kūrma's Support: When the demigods and demons churned the ocean of milk, the churning rod (Mandara Mountain) began to sink. The Lord assumed the form of a tortoise and dove deep into the water to support the mountain on His back.
- The Transcendental Scratch: Displaying His absolute, unlimited nature, the Lord felt no burden or inconvenience while carrying the heaviest mountain in the universe. The back-and-forth friction of the mountain simply relieved an itching sensation while He partially slept.
- Lord Balarāma's Posture: The category also highlights the beautiful, absolute form of Lord Balarāma, who is dressed in bluish garments and elegantly rests His signature weapon, the plow, upon His back.
