Category:God's Begetting
Theme Analysis
The philosophical essence of this category establishes the Supreme Personality of Godhead as the original, omnipotent father of all living entities, completely independent of material methods of reproduction. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that unlike ordinary living entities, who require physical intercourse to beget children, the Supreme Lord can beget offspring from any part of His spiritual body (aṅgāni yasya sakalendriya-vṛttimanti). This is most famously demonstrated when Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu begot Lord Brahmā (the first created being, known as ātma-bhū) directly from His navel lotus, without any reproductive contact with the goddess of fortune, Lakṣmī, who was sitting right beside Him. Furthermore, on a universal scale, the Lord begets the countless conditioned souls simply by casting His glance over the material energy (Prakṛti). The category also clarifies that Lord Śiva is the specific form or agency through which the Supreme Lord works to impregnate the material womb. Ultimately, the Supreme Lord is the uncaused cause—He is the supreme father who begets everyone up to Lord Brahmā, but He Himself has no father.
- The Absolute Father: The Supreme Lord is the original father of all grades of living entities, up to the highest demigod. While everyone else is begotten by a father, the Lord is the uncaused cause and has no father.
- Omnipotent Reproduction: Every part of the Lord's spiritual body possesses the potency of all other parts. He does not require physical intercourse to reproduce. He begot Lord Brahmā from His navel lotus, independently of His eternal consort, Lakṣmī.
- Impregnating by Glance: To populate the material universes, the Lord does not need any physical contact with material nature. He simply casts His glance over the material energy, impregnating her with the seeds of the living entities.
- The Role of Lord Śiva: Lord Śiva is a unique expansion of the Supreme Lord. He is the specific form (svāṅga-viśeṣābhāsa-rūpe) through which the Lord works to beget living entities within the material world.
- Begetting Worthy Sons: The true glory of a son is in his service to the father. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that while God has begotten many sons, personalities like Jesus Christ are considered "worthy sons" because they fully dedicate themselves to bringing the father's message to the world.
