Category:God's Brothers
Theme Analysis
The philosophical essence of this category establishes a crucial theological distinction: the brothers of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are never ordinary living entities (jīva-tattva). Ignorant commentators often depict the younger brothers of Lord Rāmacandra or the elder brother of Lord Kṛṣṇa as mere human siblings. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphatically clarifies that they are direct plenary expansions of the Lord Himself, known as viṣṇu-tattva. In the pastimes of Lord Rāmacandra, His brothers—Lakṣmaṇa, Bharata, and Śatrughna—are the direct incarnations of Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha, respectively. Similarly, Lord Balarāma is the first vilāsa expansion of Lord Kṛṣṇa. A secondary theme of this category is the exemplary standard of pure devotional service these divine brothers demonstrate. Whether it is Lord Lakṣmaṇa abandoning all royal comforts to follow Lord Rāma into the forest, or Bharata accepting severe austerities to rule as a saintly servant in His brother's absence, the Lord's brothers perfectly illustrate the mood of unalloyed surrender and love.
- The Principle of Viṣṇu-tattva: The brothers of the Supreme Lord are not conditioned souls. They are absolute, fully spiritual expansions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead possessing equal divine potency.
- The Fourfold Expansions (Catur-vyūha): According to the Padma Purāṇa and Viṣṇu-dharmottara, Lord Rāmacandra and His three brothers correspond to the original quadruple expansions of Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha.
- Exemplary Devotion and Sacrifice: The brothers act as the perfect devotees. Lord Bharata ruled Ayodhyā not as an enjoyer, but as a humble servant, eating barley cooked in cow urine and wearing tree bark in separation from Lord Rāmacandra.
- Conquering the World (Dig-vijaya): As the supreme emperor, Lord Rāmacandra displayed His authority by dispatching His powerful younger brothers to travel the globe and subjugate any kings who defied religious principles.
- The Pastimes of Lord Balarāma: Lord Balarāma, the elder brother of Kṛṣṇa (and the original identity of Lord Lakṣmaṇa), shares intimate pastimes with the Lord, such as tending calves in Vṛndāvana and destroying demons like Kaṁsa in Mathurā.
