Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category dissolves the mundane misconception that the Absolute Truth is blind or possesses limited, material vision. According to Vedic philosophy, the Supreme Personality of Godhead has no material eyes, yet His spiritual eyes are omnipresent and omniscient; He simultaneously sees the past, present, and future in every corner of the universe. Because His transcendental body is absolutely non-dual (advaita), any organ can perform the function of another—He can hear with His eyes, eat with His eyes, and even impregnate the material nature simply by His glance. In His universal form (virāṭ-rūpa), the sun and the moon are considered the eyes of the Lord, meaning that without His permission, no living entity would have the power of sight. For the devotees, however, the Lord’s eyes are the ultimate shelter. Resembling the pinkish petals of a newly blossomed lotus (ambujākṣa), His eyes exude an intoxicating, nectarean beauty and cast deeply compassionate glances that soothe all material agonies. Yet, when the Lord descends to annihilate demons and protect His surrendered servants, these same lotus eyes transform. As Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva or Lord Rāmacandra, His eyes become fierce, red-hot like molten gold, striking absolute terror into the hearts of the miscreants and agitating the very oceans.

  • Transcendental Omniscience: The Lord does not possess a physical body with mundane eyes, but He possesses spiritual eyes that perceive everything. Through His expansion as the Supersoul, His eyes and faces are situated everywhere.
  • The Absolute Senses: God’s bodily limbs are fully potent and interchangeable. Unlike conditioned souls, the Supreme Lord can perform any action with any sense; He can accept offerings, eat, and impregnate simply by using His eyes.
  • The Sun as the Universal Eye: In the context of the cosmic manifestation, the sun is described in the Brahma-saṁhitā as the glowing eye of the Supreme Lord. It is only because the Lord sees through the sun that the living entities have the capacity to see.
  • The Beauty of the Lotus Eyes: The Lord is famously addressed as ambujākṣa (lotus-eyed). His eyes are beautifully decorated, pinkish like the rising sun, and so captivating that a pure devotee loses all desire to look at anything else.
  • Glances of Extreme Compassion: The Lord is so affectionately tied to His devotees that He sheds tears of love and compassion for them, as seen in the creation of Bindu-sarovara. His soothing glance eradicates the threefold miseries of material life.
  • Fierce Eyes of Cosmic Anger: When punishing demons, the Lord’s eyes become terrifying instruments of wrath. Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva’s glaring eyes stole the light of the stars, and Lord Rāmacandra’s red-hot eyes literally boiled the ocean.
