Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes the absolute independence and unquestionable autonomy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Unlike the conditioned souls who are strictly bound by the laws of material nature, cause and effect, and karmic reactions, the Supreme Lord is entirely aloof and free. He is not an "order carrier" for humanity; He protects and annihilates simply by His own supreme will, and no one can argue with His activities. This absolute freedom, however, is not merely a display of ruthless power. It is most sweetly exhibited in His transcendental pastimes. The Māyāvādī philosophers, who think God must be a formless void or a stiff, majestic figure, are completely baffled when the Supreme Lord freely chooses to roam the forests of Vṛndāvana as a simple cowherd boy. Because He is completely free, He can love everyone and interact intimately with His devotees without compromising His divinity. Furthermore, the Lord shares this absolute freedom with His pure representatives; an empowered, authorized spiritual master is considered as free and as good as Lord Hari Himself.

  • Beyond Material Relativity: The Supreme Lord is the ultimate cause of all causes. Because He is completely absolute, He remains free from the mundane distinctions of cause and effect and is never entangled by the material emanations He creates.
  • The Supreme Will: God is not obligated to act according to human dictates or logic. He descends to the material world simply for His own pleasure (vinā vinodaṁ), and He exercises absolute freedom in choosing whom to protect and whom to annihilate.
  • Baffling the Impersonalists: Māyāvādī philosophers cannot comprehend how the Supreme Absolute Truth could become a cowherd boy. They fail to understand that God's supreme freedom allows Him to discard formal majesty to relish sweet, intimate love.
  • The Sweetness of Vṛndāvana: In His original form as Kṛṣṇa, the Lord's freedom is fully displayed as He moves joyfully among His friends and plays His flute, overwhelming all mobile and immobile living entities with pure ecstasy.
  • Freedom Shared with the Guru: The absolute independence of the Lord is non-different from the freedom of His pure devotees. An empowered, authorized spiritual master acts with the same absolute freedom as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
