Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes the absolute, transcendental nature of the Supreme Personality of Godhead's hearing. Impersonalists wrongly conclude that because the Absolute Truth has no material ears, He must be deaf or void. The Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad clarifies this paradox: God has no mundane ears, yet He hears everything. Because His spiritual body is non-dual (advaita) and absolutely potent, every sense can perform the function of any other sense. According to the Brahma-saṁhitā, the Lord can even hear with His eyes. The sheer reach of God's hearing is inconceivable to the conditioned mind. Although He resides eternally in Vaikuṇṭhaloka, millions of miles away, He instantly hears the desperate cries of Gajendra the elephant and the confidential prayers of Lord Brahmā. As the all-pervading Supersoul (Paramātmā) in the hearts of all living entities, He is the ultimate witness and the supreme listener. Furthermore, the Lord takes immense pleasure in hearing the right sounds. While He refuses to hear the blasphemous nonsense of atheists, He becomes profoundly satisfied when hearing kṛṣṇa-kathā, the sincere prayers of His pure devotees, or the sweet narrations of His own pastimes.

  • Transcendental Senses: God does not possess a material body with limited acoustic organs. His hearing is entirely spiritual. He possesses perfect senses, allowing Him to hear everything throughout the past, present, and future.
  • Omnipotent Acoustic Power: The Lord's body is absolute. He is not restricted to hearing only through ears. The Vedic literatures confirm that He can hear with His eyes and see with His ears, demonstrating His inconceivable sensory omnipotence.
  • Hearing from Vaikuṇṭha: The Lord is not limited by spatial distance. Even while residing in His supreme abode in the spiritual sky, He instantly hears the prayers of the demigods in Śvetadvīpa and the cries of His devotees on earth.
  • The Pleasure of the Supreme Listener: The Lord is a sentient, emotional person. He laughs heartily at the sweet prayers of Lord Brahmā and feels deep satisfaction upon hearing the glories of His own pastimes and devotees.
  • The Eternal Audience: A pure devotee is never alone. Because the Lord is situated in the heart as the Supersoul, He is the constant audience. Even if no one else attends a kīrtana, Lord Jagannātha always hears the sincere singing of His servant.
