Theme Analysis

The Supreme Personality of Godhead is often described as samo 'ham—equal to everyone. He does not envy anyone, nor is He partial to anyone. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains a profound nuance in the Lord's character: His special inclination toward His devotees. This is not a contradiction but a natural reciprocation of love. Just as a father loves all his children but is naturally more inclined toward the child who is affectionate and obedient, Kṛṣṇa takes special interest in those who surrender to Him. This inclination is known as bhakta-vatsala. Furthermore, the Lord has a specific inclination to protect the cows and brāhmaṇas (go-brāhmaṇa-hitāya ca), indicating that human prosperity depends on these two pillars of Vedic culture. While He stands as a neutral witness to the activities of the general populace, He actively intervenes to protect and satisfy His devotees.

  • Equality and Partiality: God is equal to all living entities, yet He is specifically inclined to His devotees who serve Him with love.
  • Parental Analogy: This special affection is compared to a father who has many children but is particularly affectionate to the one who loves him most.
  • Cows and Brāhmaṇas: The Lord is always inclined to do good to the cows and qualified brāhmaṇas.
  • Protection: If a person surrenders even once, the Lord becomes inclined to give him protection and considers him His ward.
  • Reciprocation: The Lord's inclination is a response to the devotee's surrender; as they surrender, He rewards them.
