Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category highlights the absolute omniscience of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because the Lord is the time element and the supreme creator, He flawlessly knows everything that has happened in the past, everything happening in the present, and everything that will happen in the future. On an intimate level, the Lord expands as the Paramātmā (Supersoul) and sits directly within the heart of every single living entity. Therefore, He is the supreme "knower of the field" (kṣetrajña). While the individual soul only knows the pains and pleasures of its own specific body, the Lord simultaneously knows the desires, motives, and karmic history of every living being across the entire creation. Understanding God's knowing fundamentally changes how a devotee approaches prayer and devotional service. Because the Lord is the supreme father, He already knows exactly what we need before we ask. Therefore, a pure devotee never approaches God like a beggar, demanding material benefits or solutions to distress. Instead, the pure devotee simply surrenders, trusting that the Lord knows perfectly how to protect, provide for, and ultimately liberate them.

  • Absolute Omniscience: The Supreme Lord is never in ignorance. As the supreme creator and the time factor, He possesses perfect, unbroken knowledge of the past, present, and future.
  • The Supreme Knower of the Body: The Lord sits within the heart as the Paramātmā. While the individual soul is the knower of its own specific body (kṣetra), the Lord is the supreme kṣetrajña, perfectly knowing the field of activities of every single body in existence.
  • Knowing the Devotee's Motives: Because He sits in the heart, the Lord intimately knows the deepest desires and motives of His devotees. He expertly adjusts circumstances, fulfilling their pure desires while kindly handling any lingering material ambitions, as He did with Dhruva Mahārāja.
  • The Futility of Demanding: Because God already knows our necessities better than we do, approaching Him with a "shopping list" of material demands is foolish. The father automatically provides for the son; therefore, the only business of a pure devotee is to render loving service without asking for anything in return.
  • The Knower of the Vedas: Impersonalists often claim a monopoly on Vedic knowledge, but the Lord declares in the Bhagavad-gītā that He is the original compiler of the Vedānta and the only supreme knower of its factual purpose, which is devotional service.
