Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the transcendental nature of the Lord's mouth in both His personal and universal forms (virāṭ-rūpa). In the universal form, the Lord's mouth is the source of the element of fire and the origin of the brāhmaṇas, who represent the Lord's mouth by speaking Vedic knowledge. The Lord's mouth is also the supreme source of transcendental nectar—while the Ganges River flows from His lotus feet to purify the universe, the Bhagavad-gītā emanates directly from His lotus mouth, bringing ultimate enlightenment. Furthermore, the Lord's mouth displays inconceivable pastimes, whether revealing the entire cosmic manifestation to mother Yaśodā or manifesting the ferocious, terrifying teeth of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, which brings absolute fear to demons and absolute fearlessness to His devotees.

  • The Generating Center of the Universal Form: In the virāṭ-rūpa, the Lord's mouth is the original source of the fire demigod, the vocal vibratory energies, and the Vedic hymns.
  • The Origin of the Brāhmaṇas: The intellectual class, the brāhmaṇas, are born from the mouth of the universal form and are meant to distribute the knowledge of the Vedas.
  • The Supreme Nectar of Vedic Knowledge: The purest transcendental knowledge, particularly the Bhagavad-gītā, flows like a river of nectar directly from the lotus mouth of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Unlimited Glories Described by Ananta: Lord Anantadeva utilizes His thousands of mouths to constantly glorify the Supreme Lord, yet He can never reach the end of His pastimes.
  • The Fearful and Wondrous Forms: The Lord's mouth can simultaneously display ultimate terror to demons like Hiraṇyakaśipu and inconceivable cosmic wonders to devotees like mother Yaśodā.
