Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is the absolute whole, and all living entities—from the tiny mosquito up to Lord Brahmā—are His fragmental parts (aṁśa). Just as the parts of a body are meant to serve the whole body, the constitutional position of every living entity is to engage in the devotional service of the Supreme Lord. The demigods are also parts of the Lord's universal body, and worshiping them separately is unnecessary because satisfying the Lord automatically satisfies all His parts, just as watering the root of a tree nourishes all its branches. Furthermore, the Lord expands Himself into plenary portions (svāṁśa), such as the puruṣa-avatāras, who act as maintainers of the universe but remain complete in themselves, unlike the eternally subordinate living entities (vibhinnāṁśa).

  • The Complete Whole and the Fragmental Sparks: Every living entity is an eternal, fragmental spark of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, possessing His qualities in minute quantity.
  • The Duty to Serve the Whole: Just as a hand or leg cannot derive independent pleasure but must serve the stomach to be nourished, the living entity can only be happy by rendering devotional service to the Supreme Lord.
  • The Position of the Demigods: The demigods are simply empowered parts of the Lord's universal body; therefore, directly worshiping the Supreme Lord automatically satisfies all the demigods.
  • Plenary Expansions Versus Separated Parts: While the living entities are separated parts (vibhinnāṁśa), the Supreme Lord also expands into direct plenary portions (svāṁśa) like the puruṣa-avatāras, who are fully potent and nondifferent from Him.
