Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the philosophical nature of the brahmajyoti, which is simply God's rays. The impersonal Brahman effulgence, which Māyāvādīs and jñānīs aspire to merge into, is not the ultimate Absolute Truth. Rather, it is the glowing, spiritual illumination emanating directly from the transcendental body of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa (just as sunshine emanates from the sun-god). While the less intelligent impersonalists are captivated by this formless light and remain as atomic spiritual sparks within it, the pure devotees never accept sāyujya-mukti. Instead, the devotees seek to penetrate the bodily rays to associate directly with the Supreme Lord in the Vaikuṇṭha planets.

  • The Source of the Brahmajyoti: The impersonal spiritual effulgence is not the ultimate truth, but simply the bodily rays emanating from the eternal, transcendental body of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • The Destination of Impersonalists: Those who lack complete spiritual knowledge, such as the jñānīs and yogīs, achieve the salvation of merging into these transcendental rays.
  • The Incomplete Realization: While the brahmajyoti is eternal and full of knowledge, neglecting the personal association of the Lord leaves the soul as a mere atomic spark without spiritual activity.
  • The Aspiration of Pure Devotees: True devotees never desire to merge into the impersonal rays; instead, they seek direct, personal association with the Lord in the spiritual planets.
