Theme Analysis

This category examines the significance of the color red in relation to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that "God's redness" manifests in three primary ways. First, it refers to the specific color of the yuga-avatāra in the Tretā-yuga, who appeared with a reddish bodily complexion to teach the process of sacrifice. Second, it describes the exquisite beauty of the Lord's eyes, which are often compared to the reddish petals of a lotus flower (aruṇa-locana). Third, redness appears as a symptom of intense emotion—either the fury of Lord Varāha and Lord Balarāma when confronting demons, or the flushed complexion of Lord Balarāma during physical exertion.

  • The Red Incarnation: In the Tretā-yuga, the Lord appears with a red complexion (rakta-varṇa). This form is distinct from the white, blackish, and yellow forms seen in other ages.
  • Lotus-Like Eyes: A standard description of the Lord's beauty involves His reddish eyes. Whether it is Lord Ṛṣabhadeva, the Viṣṇu forms, or Lord Kṛṣṇa Himself, this feature enhances His enchanting nature.
  • Symptom of Anger and Power: Redness is also associated with vīrya (heroism) and krodha (anger). When the Lord is agitated or engaged in fighting demons, His eyes and complexion turn blood-red, striking fear into the hearts of the impious.
  • The Mystery of Colors: Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that while the Lord is sometimes described as colorless (nirguṇa), He simultaneously displays various transcendental colors, including a mysterious redness that defeats all material conceptions.
