Theme Analysis

In Vedic culture, the role of a husband is synonymous with being a fearless protector and provider. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the only factual husband of all living entities because He alone can offer absolute, fearless shelter. To teach human society how to properly execute family life, the Lord appeared as Śrī Rāmacandra and acted as the ideal, faithful husband (eka-patnī-vrata). Although the Lord could have instantly manifested millions of Sītās through His internal potency, He chose to fight a devastating war and annihilate Rāvaṇa's entire dynasty simply to demonstrate a husband's duty to protect his wife.

Furthermore, the category establishes Lord Nārāyaṇa as the eternal husband of Lakṣmīdevī, the goddess of fortune. Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly refutes the modern mundane concept of daridra-nārāyaṇa ("poor Nārāyaṇa"), explaining that the husband of the goddess of fortune can never be poor. Because Lakṣmī is restless (Cañcalā) and only stays peacefully by the side of her husband, true wealth and prosperity are only found when engaged in the service of Nārāyaṇa. Ultimately, the Supreme Lord is completely self-sufficient and has no hankering for a wife, but out of His boundless causeless mercy, He happily becomes a husband to fulfill the intense conjugal love of pure devotees.

  • The Ideal Standard: Lord Rāmacandra perfectly demonstrated the duties of a faithful husband by annihilating Rāvaṇa's entire family to rescue and protect Mother Sītā.
  • The True Protector: A real husband must be a fearless shelter. Because only the Supreme Lord is completely fearless, He is the only factual husband of all living beings.
  • The Husband of Fortune: Lord Nārāyaṇa is the eternal husband of Lakṣmī. Therefore, the concept of a "poor God" (daridra-nārāyaṇa) is absurd; all wealth belongs to Him and must be engaged in His service.
  • Transcendental Reciprocation: Although self-sufficient, the Lord willingly accepts the role of a husband to fulfill the pure, unmotivated loving desires of His devotees.
