Theme Analysis

To think of the Supreme Personality of Godhead as an enemy is technically a profound misunderstanding. As Śrīla Prabhupāda explains, the Lord is the eternal friend and well-wisher of all living entities. Thinking of Him as an enemy is a product of illusion and is described as animal intelligence (paśu-buddhi). However, the absolute nature of the Lord means that any contact with Him, whether favorable or unfavorable, yields tremendous spiritual benefit.

Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently points out the phenomenon of "adversarial Kṛṣṇa consciousness." Demons like Kaṁsa were so terrified of the Lord that they thought of Him constantly—while sitting, eating, sleeping, or walking. Because the mind was fully absorbed in the Supreme Lord, even as an enemy, this intense meditation cleansed them of all sinful reactions and awarded them spiritual liberation. Thus, Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that the Lord is entirely merciful even to His so-called enemies. Furthermore, while demons falsely view the Lord as their enemy, pure devotees enthusiastically glorify the Lord as the ultimate enemy of the demons (such as Murāri, the enemy of the demon Mura, or the enemy of Madhu). By seeking shelter in the Lord as the vanquisher of the asuras, devotees find absolute protection from all material distresses.

  • The Illusion of Enmity: Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the Lord is no one's enemy. Thinking of Him as such is due to illusion (māyā) and is considered the intelligence of an animal.
  • Adversarial Kṛṣṇa Consciousness: Even if one thinks of the Lord adversely, like the demon Kaṁsa did out of intense fear, the constant meditation on Kṛṣṇa cleanses all sins and brings spiritual perfection.
  • Equal Mercy: Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Lord's mercy is entirely impartial. Whether one approaches Him as a friend or an enemy, the Lord bestows immense spiritual benefit upon the soul.
  • The Protector of Devotees: Pure devotees lovingly address the Lord as the "enemy of Madhu" or the "enemy of Mura" to invoke His supreme protection against evil influences and material miseries.
