Category:God Creates the Material World

The origin and purpose of the cosmic manifestation are perfectly explained in the Vedic literatures. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the creation of the material world establishes that God existed before the universe and is thus completely transcendental to it. The Supreme Personality of Godhead expands Himself as Mahā-Viṣṇu and utilizes His external material energy to effortlessly create millions of universes. However, although the Lord creates the material world by His external energy and enters into it as Paramātmā, He remains completely aloof, eternally situated in His internal spiritual energy.

A prominent philosophical doubt raised by materialistic men is why a loving God would create a material world so full of suffering. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the Lord does not wish to inflict suffering upon anyone. He creates the material world solely because the misguided living entities harbor a rebellious desire to enjoy independently of Him. Thus, the suffering found within the material world is not God's creation; it is generated by the conditioned souls themselves through their fruitive activities and the consequent reactions of karma. The true divine plan behind the creation is profoundly merciful: the Lord provides this material arena to give the conditioned souls a chance to exhaust their material desires, reform themselves, and ultimately elevate back to Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

Understanding the Lord's hand in creation completely transforms a devotee's perspective on the material world. A pure devotee knows that the majestic acts of creating, maintaining, and destroying the cosmos are simply another aspect of the Lord's grand pastimes, no different in absolute nature from His intimate rasa-līlā. Therefore, rather than resorting to the dry, artificial renunciation of the impersonalist, the intelligent devotee seeks to utilize the God-created material world in the transcendental service of its supreme creator.

  • The Pre-Existent Creator: God existed before the material world and expands as Mahā-Viṣṇu to create the universes, remaining entirely unaffected by His external energy.
  • The Divine Purpose: The Lord creates the material world to fulfill the independent desires of the conditioned souls and to give them a chance to return to Godhead.
  • The Origin of Suffering: God does not create suffering; the miseries of material existence are manufactured by the living entities themselves through their karma.
  • The Spiritual Vision: Pure devotees do not artificially renounce the material world; instead, they recognize it as God's property and utilize it in His loving service.
