Theme Analysis

The Supreme Personality of Godhead is often addressed as Varada, the bestower of benedictions. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that because the Lord is complete and unlimited, He is capable of fulfilling any desire, whether it be for an ideal spouse, immense wealth, or ultimate liberation. However, a major theme in this category is the foolishness of the conditioned soul when approaching the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently uses a humorous analogy of an old woman who, when God appeared to offer her a benediction, simply asked Him to help her lift a heavy bundle of sticks back onto her head. Similarly, when inexperienced people approach God, they ask to be loaded down with the heavy burdens of material life—money, family, and temporary opulence.

In stark contrast, Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights the behavior of pure Vaiṣṇavas. The supreme examples are Dhruva Mahārāja and Prahlāda Mahārāja. Dhruva initially performed severe austerities to gain a material kingdom greater than his father's. Yet, when the Supreme Lord actually appeared before him to give the benediction, Dhruva was so spiritually satisfied that he refused any material reward, declaring, "svāmin kṛtārtho 'smi varaṁ na yāce" (I am fully satisfied; I do not want any benediction). Similarly, when Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva offered Prahlāda any benediction he desired, Prahlāda refused to act like a "mercantile devotee." Instead, he asked only for the benediction to remain an eternal servant of the Lord's servant, Nārada Muni, and expressed his deep lamentation for the suffering of the conditioned souls bereft of Kṛṣṇa's love. Ultimately, Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that the greatest benediction God gives is simply the association of His pure devotees life after life.

  • The Ultimate Source: The Supreme Lord is the origin of all blessings. Whatever prosperity a person achieves through personal endeavor ultimately depends on the merciful benediction of the Lord.
  • The Foolishness of Material Desires: Asking the unlimited Lord for temporary material opulence is foolish. It is akin to asking for a heavy burden to be placed back upon one's head.
  • The Perfection of Dhruva and Prahlāda: Pure devotees completely reject material benedictions when face-to-face with the Lord. Their only desire is uninterrupted devotional service and the deliverance of others.
  • Demigods vs. the Supreme Lord: Benedictions awarded by demigods are temporary and perish with the cosmic manifestation. A benediction from Lord Viṣṇu, however, delivers the soul back home, back to Godhead.
