Theme Analysis
The search for pleasure is the driving force of all living entities, but true, eternal satisfaction can only be found in the Supreme Personality of Godhead. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the Vedic hymns confirm that God is the unlimited fountainhead of all pleasure. In the spiritual sky, within the brahma-jyotir, the Lord maintains innumerable Vaikuṇṭha planets designed specifically for the unlimited pleasure of the living entities. Because He is the source of all pleasing humors, engaging in His devotional service automatically elevates the conditioned soul to the ānanda-maya, or joyful, status of life.
The Lord's names frequently reflect His capacity to grant bliss. For example, Kṛṣṇa is famously known as Govinda, which means He who gives pleasure to the cows and the senses. When the Lord descends into the material world, such as in His forms as Lord Rāmacandra or Lord Jagannātha, He performs transcendental pastimes specifically for the pleasure of His devotees. Simply by understanding or seeing the Lord, a pure devotee derives a level of satisfaction so profound that even brahmānanda, the pleasure of merging into the impersonal Brahman, becomes utterly insignificant.
To actually derive this transcendental pleasure, one must engage in the proper process of hearing and chanting. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that discussing the pastimes of the Supreme Lord in the association of pure devotees is immensely pleasing to the ear and the heart. When one hears from an authoritative source, like the great brāhmaṇas or sages, one can achieve the same transcendental bliss experienced by exalted devotees like Vidura. Whether a yogī is taking pleasure by meditating upon Lord Nārāyaṇa within the heart, or a devotee is actively serving Him, the ultimate conclusion is that surrendering to Kṛṣṇa is the only way to achieve supreme, everlasting pleasure.
