Theme Analysis

The Vedic literatures firmly establish that the Absolute Truth is the supreme conscious being. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda and the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, the original source of the cosmic manifestation is abhijña, which means fully cognizant and capable of understanding. Modern science falsely theorizes that life and consciousness arise from dead matter, but the śruti and smṛti confirm that matter itself is not cognizant. The Supreme Being is the conscious identity from whom everything emanates, and He is directly and indirectly cognizant of every detail within His creation. Because He is fully aware of everything, He perfectly advises the conditioned souls to detach themselves from material existence.

The Lord's cognizance is a manifestation of His supreme spiritual energy. The Absolute Truth possesses three primary internal potencies: sandhinī (eternal existence), hlādinī (bliss), and saṁvit (cognizance or knowledge). The activities of the saṁvit-śakti produce the effect of absolute cognition. Because God and His knowledge are unlimited, His cognizance is ever-expanding; as soon as He is cognizant of some of His energies, He perceives even more, causing both His energies and His knowledge to increase eternally. Even when incarnations like Lord Kṛṣṇa or Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu accept formal spiritual masters to set a societal example, They remain fully cognizant of all knowledge by Their transcendental nature.

While both God and the living entities are conscious persons, there is an insurmountable difference in their level of cognizance. The individual soul (ātmā) and the Supersoul (Paramātmā) are both cognizant living forces, but the living entity's knowing capacity is restricted to a very limited sphere. In contrast, God is cognizant unlimitedly and everywhere throughout the entire universe. The individual self can never be equal to the Supreme Lord in cognizance; if they were equal, the living entity could never fall into the illusion and forgetfulness of material existence.

Ultimately, this absolute cognizance is an inherent characteristic of the Lord's spiritual body. The Supreme Personality of Godhead possesses an eternal, cognizant, and blissful form. This self-effulgent, changeless body is situated in pure transcendental goodness and is eternally free from the contamination of material qualities. Whether appearing before Devakī or residing within the glaring effulgence of the brahmajyoti, the Lord remains the supreme predominator, eternally joyful, and fully cognizant.

  • The Conscious Creator: The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam defines the Absolute Truth as abhijña (cognizant), refuting the theory that life comes from dead matter.
  • The Potency of Knowledge: The Lord's cognizance is a manifestation of His saṁvit-śakti, the internal potency of absolute, ever-expanding knowledge.
  • Infinite vs. Infinitesimal: While both God and the living entity are conscious persons, God is cognizant universally, whereas the living entity is limited and prone to forgetfulness.
  • The Spiritual Body: The Supreme Lord possesses a self-effulgent, uncontaminated form that is eternally composed of existence, bliss, and pure cognition.
