Theme Analysis

The assertion that "God is dead" is a prominent feature of modern, atheistic propaganda. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, this is not a philosophical realization, but a demonic attempt to banish the Supreme Lord so that conditioned souls can continue their sinful activities without restriction. Atheistic vultures want to see God dead so they can falsely claim, "I am God, and I can do whatever I like." This "owl philosophy" is born of deep envy and spiritual blindness. In reality, God is the supreme living being; His form is sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha (eternal, full of knowledge and bliss). He never dies, and as part and parcel of God, the living entity never actually dies either.

The foolishness of claiming God is dead is easily exposed by observing the flawless management of the universe. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that the sun rises exactly on time, the moon rises perfectly, and the seasonal changes occur in due course. If there is such perfect management, how can anyone logically claim there is no government or no supreme lawgiver? Furthermore, God is constantly supplying our daily necessities. It is lunacy to pray for daily bread, receive the bread, and then claim that the provider of the bread is dead. God is not dead; rather, the conditioned souls are spiritually dead, unable to appreciate His perfect functioning.

Even if a rebellious soul stubbornly insists that God is dead, they cannot escape His supreme authority. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that just as the death of a king does not mean the government's laws cease to exist, even if one foolishly claims God is dead, God's stringent laws of material nature (karma) are certainly not dead. The rebellious soul will continue to be punished at every step by these laws, rotting in the prison house of material existence. If one challenges God, the Lord will simply fulfill that desire by giving them the intelligence to remain in darkness.

When Śrīla Prabhupāda first brought the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement to the West, he encountered a society heavily imbibed with this "God is dead" philosophy. However, through the powerful chanting of Hari-kīrtana and the presentation of pure Vedic knowledge (such as the Bhagavad-gītā), he proved that God is not only alive but factually present with us at every moment. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement exists to cure the lunacy of atheism, remove the covering of material illusion, and teach humanity how to approach the supreme living being face to face.

  • The Demonic Motive: The "God is dead" philosophy is spread by rascals who want to perform sinful activities without restriction or consequence.
  • The Evidence of Life: The perfect management of the universe and the continuous supply of daily necessities scientifically prove that the Supreme Controller is alive and active.
  • The Unbreakable Law: Even if one foolishly claims God is dead, His strict laws of material nature are never dead, and the rebellious soul will be punished at every step.
  • The Spiritual Cure: The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement proves that God is the supreme living being, responsive to His devotees, and approachable face to face.
