Theme Analysis

The ultimate conclusion of Vedic knowledge is the realization that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is everything. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda and the Bhagavad-gītā, after many lifetimes of philosophical research, a truly wise person surrenders to Kṛṣṇa, knowing vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti: Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) is all that is. Because the Lord is the original cause (aham sarvasya prabhavaḥ) and the creator of all energies, everything in existence—whether subtle or gross, material or spiritual—is simply an expansion of His potency. The Upaniṣadic statement sarvaṁ khalv idaṁ brahma confirms that the entire cosmic manifestation is interwoven with the Lord's Brahman energy. Because the energy and the energetic are nondifferent, the Supreme Lord is factually everything.

However, this all-pervasive nature must be understood through the philosophy of acintya-bhedābheda-tattva: inconceivable simultaneous oneness and difference. While God is everything, this does not mean that everything is God, nor does it mean He loses His personal form. The Māyāvādī philosophers mistakenly think that if Kṛṣṇa expands into everything, His separate personal identity is lost and He becomes formless. This is a material conception. The Supreme Lord clearly states in the Bhagavad-gītā that although everything rests upon Him and He is spread all over the universe in His impersonal form, He remains completely aloof and retains His original, eternal personality.

For the conditioned soul, realizing that God is everything is the cure for material illusion. Forgetfulness of the fact that the Supreme Lord is the actual proprietor of everything is the root of ignorance. Modern humans boast of their creations, but they cannot produce the raw materials—wood, iron, or earth—which all belong exclusively to God. True intelligence means understanding that we are nothing and God is everything.

The highest perfection is achieved by the pure devotees, the mahā-bhāgavatas. They do not waste time discriminating between Brahman and non-Brahman because they perfectly see the Lord interwoven in everything. They see an eternal relationship with the Lord in every object, knowing that there is absolutely no existence separate from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because they accept the Supreme Lord as everything, they are completely freed from the influence of material time and illusion.

  • Vāsudeva Is All That Is: Everything in existence is an expansion of the Lord's superior and inferior energies; therefore, because the energy and energetic are one, God is everything.
  • Simultaneously One and Different: Although the Lord is everything (sarvaṁ khalv idaṁ brahma), He does not lose His personal identity; He remains aloof as the Supreme Person.
  • Refuting the Māyāvādīs: The idea that the Lord becomes formless simply because He expands into everything is a flawed, material misconception.
  • The Vision of the Mahā-bhāgavatas: Pure devotees see the Supreme Lord perfectly interwoven in everything, recognizing His absolute proprietorship over the entire cosmos.
