Theme Analysis
A major philosophical controversy arises over the Vedic descriptions of the Supreme Lord as being formless or nirākāra. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, this does not mean that God lacks a body or personal identity. When the scriptures state that the Lord is formless, it simply means that He has no material form like ours, which is temporary and subject to deterioration. Because His transcendental body is completely devoid of material elements and cannot be conceived of by blunt material senses, He is sometimes described negatively as having no form. Like a geometric point that is defined as having no length or breadth simply because it cannot be measured by mundane instruments, the Lord is called formless because His spiritual form cannot be measured by material experience.
Unfortunately, less intelligent men and mental speculators heavily misunderstand this concept. In the Bhagavad-gītā, Lord Kṛṣṇa states that foolish impersonalists believe He was originally formless and only temporarily assumed a material body for the sake of incarnation. The Śaṅkarītes and Māyāvādī philosophers reject the direct meaning of the Vedic mantras, trying to establish the Absolute Truth as ultimately nameless, inactive, and devoid of personality. They maintain this false conclusion despite clear Vedic injunctions explaining the eternal, spiritual form of the Lord.
This misconception is not merely a philosophical error; it is highly dangerous and favored by the demonic class of men. The asuras (demons) are terrified of the Supreme Lord's authoritative, causative form. Therefore, they eagerly embrace the idea that God is formless or void to feel secure in their sinful activities, believing they will not be vanquished or judged by a personal Supreme Being. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the Hare Krsna movement acts as the only light to counteract this dangerous propaganda, rescuing living entities from the illusion that God is a formless void and that they themselves are God.
The reality is that God's form and formlessness exist simultaneously: He is formless materially, but perfectly formed spiritually. The Vedas explain that although He has no material hands or legs, He can walk incredibly fast and accept any offering made by His devotees. While the Supreme Personality of Godhead remains formless and invisible to the neophyte or the atheist, His exquisitely beautiful, transcendental form is fully realized, perceived, and loved by the expert servitor through patience, perseverance, and pure devotional service.
- The True Meaning of Formless: When the Vedas describe God as formless, it exclusively means that He possesses no temporary, material form; His body is entirely spiritual.
- The Impersonalist Misconception: Māyāvādīs and mental speculators falsely conclude that the Absolute Truth is ultimately void, nameless, and inactive.
- The Demonic Refuge: Demons and atheists prefer a formless God because it allows them to feel secure from divine judgment and punishment.
- The Spiritual Reality: The Lord simultaneously has no material form but possesses an eternal spiritual form, which is directly realized by pure devotees.

- If the SP of Godhead is formless, how can He be said to walk very fast and accept everything offered to Him? Rejecting the direct meaning of the Vedic mantras, the Mayavadi philosophers interpret them and try to establish the Absolute Truth as formless
- In the Bhagavad-gita the Lord says, The impersonalists think that I have no form, that I am formless, but that at present I have accepted a form to serve a purpose, and now I am manifested. But such speculators are factually without sharp intelligence
- In the original Islam the form is not accepted. That is Vedic description, form and formless. Formless means no material form and form means spiritual form, simultaneous

- That the Lord is formless or impersonal means that He has nothing like a material form and is not like any material personality
- The Buddhist philosophers clearly deny both the soul and God, and although the Sankarites do not openly deny God, they say that the Absolute is nirakara, or formless
- The Hare Krsna movement, or Krsna consciousness movement, is the only light for the foolish living entities who think either that there is no God or that if God exists He is formless and they themselves are also God
- The Vedic literature clearly states that the Lord's transcendental body is completely different from ours; thus He is sometimes described as formless. This means that He has no form like ours and that He is devoid of a form we can conceive of
- These misconceptions (that there is no God or that if God exists He is formless) are very dangerous, and the only way to counteract them is to spread the Hare Krsna movement
- This causal form of the Lord is not at all pleasing to the asuras, and therefore they think of the Lord as formless in order to feel secure that they will not be vanquished by the Lord
- This form (of God) has nothing whatsoever to do with material forms. Impersonalists say - Oh, you say Krsna has a form. If so, how can you say that He is the Supreme? The impersonal Brahman is the Supreme, and the impersonal Brahman is formless
- This is very important verse. Form and formless. When we speak of formless, we speak that God or even living entity, all of us, we have no material form. Just like we have got this form, but this form is temporary and it will never come again
W
- We should not claim that God is formless and that He has no eyes, no head or whatever. Actually it is stated in the Vedas that Krsna has no hand but that He can accept our offering. This means that He has no material hand
- When the Lord actually descends on the earth or anywhere within the universe, the less intelligent class of men also mistake Him to be one of them, and thus they imagine the Transcendence to be formless or impersonal
- When we speak of formless, we speak that God or even living entity, all of us, we have no material form
- Whenever in the scripture it is said that God is without form, that means He has no form which we have got experience. But He has got form. Just the same example. When you cannot measure, you say a point has no length, no breadth
