Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category addresses the unique and compassionate mission of Lord Buddha, an empowered incarnation (śaktyāveśa-avatāra) of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Buddha appeared at a time when the general populace was highly degraded, misusing Vedic injunctions to justify rampant and unnecessary animal slaughter. Out of His boundless compassion for the suffering animals and the degraded human society, the Lord descended to establish the principle of ahiṁsā (nonviolence). Because the people were heavily atheistic and attached to rituals that allowed animal sacrifice, Lord Buddha tactically rejected the authority of the Vedas and preached that there is no God. However, this was a transcendental trick; by convincing the faithless masses to follow Him and His teachings of nonviolence, He indirectly made the atheists worship Him—the Supreme Lord Himself. Therefore, while Vaiṣṇavas reject Buddhist philosophy as atheistic, they respectfully accept and worship Lord Buddha as an authorized incarnation foretold in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

  • The Compassionate Mission: Lord Buddha appeared specifically out of compassion to stop the rampant and unnecessary slaughter of animals, establishing the universal principle of ahiṁsā, or nonviolence.
  • Rejecting Vedic Authority: Because demons and unqualified persons were using the Vedas to justify animal sacrifice, Lord Buddha superficially decried and rejected Vedic authority to completely halt the killing.
  • Tricking the Atheist Class: Dealing with a population that did not believe in God, Lord Buddha preached an atheistic philosophy. However, by demanding they follow Him, He successfully cheated the atheists into worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • The Authorized Incarnation: Despite preaching a philosophy categorized as atheism, Lord Buddha is fully accepted by Vaiṣṇavas as an incarnation of the Lord, as clearly foretold in authorized scriptures like the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
