The philosophical essence of this category establishes the absolute supremacy and origin of the material creation through Lord Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, famously known as Mahā-Viṣṇu. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Mahā-Viṣṇu is the first puruṣa-avatāra, expanding directly from Lord Saṅkarṣaṇa. Lying down in the Causal Ocean (Kāraṇa Ocean) in a state of transcendental slumber known as yoga-nidrā, Mahā-Viṣṇu orchestrates the entire cosmic manifestation simply by His breathing. When He exhales, innumerable universes emanate from the pores of His skin like atomic particles; when He inhales, all universes and conditioned souls merge back into His body. Furthermore, by merely glancing over the material energy (māyā), He agitates the mahat-tattva (the total material energy) to begin the detailed process of universal creation. He is the master of eternal time, the origin of Lord Brahmā's entire lifespan, and the source of all subsequent incarnations, including Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu.
