Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes the absolute singularity of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda continuously emphasizes the Vedic conclusion that God is one without a second (eka brahma dvitīya nāsti). There is no such thing as a Hindu God, Muslim God, or Christian God; sectarian divisions are created by human ignorance. Because God is one, His law, or dharma, is also ultimately one: pure devotional service to the Supreme Lord. Although the Lord is one, He inconceivably expands Himself into innumerable forms, incarnations, and energies (Brahman, Paramātmā, and Bhagavān) while maintaining His singular identity. Śrīla Prabhupāda carefully distinguishes the one Supreme Lord from the plural living entities (nityo nityānām) and the millions of demigods. He also vigorously refutes the Māyāvādī misconception that because we are qualitatively one with God, every living entity is God.

  • The Universal Supreme Being: God is completely transcendental to mundane, sectarian designations. Just as gold remains gold in any community, the Supreme Lord is universally one for all living beings.
  • The Ultimate Religion: Since God is the singular supreme authority, religion (dharma) is simply the universal law enacted by Him. Therefore, the essence of all true religion is one: learning how to love and serve God.
  • The Singular Maintainer: The Vedic literatures perfectly distinguish between the one infinite Lord (nityo) and the plural infinitesimal souls (nityānām). God is the singular maintainer who provides for the innumerable living entities.
  • Expansions and Manifestations: The Absolute Truth is one, but by His inconceivable potency, He manifests as Brahman, Paramātmā, and Bhagavān, and expands into unlimited forms without ever losing His oneness.
  • Demigods are not the Supreme: While God is one, there are millions of demigods who are simply powerful living entities acting as universal administrators. They must never be confused with the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • Refuting the Māyāvāda Illusion: While the living entities share a qualitative spiritual oneness with the Lord, they are quantitatively minute. The philosophy that claims "everyone is God" is a foolish, atheistic illusion.
