Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is eternally transcendental, existing completely beyond the jurisdiction of the material modes of nature. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that whether the Lord remains in His eternal abode or descends into the material universes as an incarnation, His body, mind, and activities are always situated in pure goodness (śuddha-sattva). Although less intelligent persons and Māyāvādī philosophers mistake the Lord's form for a material creation or assume the ultimate truth is an impersonal void, the Vedic literatures confirm that God is a transcendental person full of spiritual variegatedness. Because He is beyond the reach of material senses and mental speculation, the transcendental Lord can only be perceived and understood through submissive aural reception and unalloyed devotional service (bhakti-yoga). By hearing the transcendental pastimes of the Lord, the conditioned soul is freed from material contamination and reinstated in its eternal relationship with Him.

  • The Uncontaminated Supreme: The Supreme Lord is always unaffected by the modes of material nature. His original form and all His incarnations are entirely spiritual.
  • Beyond Mental Speculation: The transcendental Lord cannot be understood by empirical science or mental speculation. He is revealed only to sincere devotees.
  • Spiritual Variegatedness: Transcendence does not mean a formless void. The Lord possesses eternal names, forms, qualities, and pastimes that are full of transcendental bliss.
  • The Supreme Controller: The Lord is the cause of all causes. Although He perfectly directs the material energy, He is never bound by the laws of karma or material reactions.
