Theme Analysis

Materialistic men continuously chase after wealth and opulence, but Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that without God, the goddess of fortune is simply an illusion. Lakṣmī is the eternal consort and internal energy of Lord Viṣṇu, and she never resides anywhere independently of her husband. When people try to exploit the world's resources for their own sense gratification without recognizing the Supreme Lord as the true proprietor, they are pursuing a phantasm that will only bind them further to material existence. In reality, although even the greatest demigods pray for her favor, the goddess of fortune herself is solely dedicated to seeking the pleasure of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. True spiritual intelligence means understanding that all wealth belongs to Nārāyaṇa and should be utilized in His service. By giving up the illusory pursuit of independent wealth and instead surrendering to the Supreme Lord, a devotee automatically receives all the blessings and favor of the goddess of fortune.

  • The Illusion of Independent Wealth: Pursuing material opulences without acknowledging the Supreme Lord is an exercise in futility. The goddess of fortune cannot be possessed; she lives only under the protection of Lord Viṣṇu.
  • The Supreme Proprietor: All wealth is the property of Nārāyaṇa. To think of the Lord as poverty-stricken or to attempt to enjoy His wealth without Him is a hallmark of ignorance.
  • The Devotion of Lakṣmī: Despite being the object of worship for kings and demigods, the goddess of fortune remains the humble, unalloyed servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • The Inseparable Couple: Lakṣmī and Nārāyaṇa are eternally inseparable. Whenever the Lord descends or wherever He is present, His eternal consort is always with Him, resting upon His chest.
  • Attaining True Fortune: The secret to gaining the favor of the goddess of fortune is not direct endeavor or mundane philanthropy, but engaging in pure devotional service to her husband, the Supreme Lord.
