Theme Analysis

The element of water holds a profoundly sacred and foundational position in Vedic cosmology and the pastimes of the Supreme Lord. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the very name Nārāyaṇa indicates the Supreme Personality of Godhead who rests upon the water (nāra meaning water, and ayana meaning resting place). Before the creation of the planetary systems, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu lies on the vast garbha water filling half the universe. From His abdomen sprouts the universal lotus stem that supports all the floating planets. In this cosmic sense, water is the primal element; it is sometimes described as the perspiration or semen of the Supreme Lord, from which all living entities emerge and are sustained.

Water is also the stage for some of the Lord's most magnificent incarnations. At the end of a millennium, the Lord assumes the form of Matsya, the gigantic fish, to protect His devotees and enjoy transcendental pastimes in the waters of inundation. When the earth was plunged into the depths of the Garbhodaka Ocean by a demon, the Lord appeared as Varāha, the giant boar. Diving into the water like a great mountain, He effortlessly rescued the earth on His tusks, entirely ignoring the derisive barking of the demons. Similarly, Lord Rāmacandra demonstrated His uncommonly wonderful power by causing heavy stones to float upon the ocean water to construct a bridge to Laṅkā.

Beyond cosmic events, water plays an intimate role in pure devotional service. In Vṛndāvana, the water of the Yamunā River is a spiritually conscious entity, serving Kṛṣṇa in the passive state of śānta-rasa. Kṛṣṇa Himself declares in the Bhagavad-gītā that He will accept even a simple offering of water if it is presented with genuine love and devotion. Therefore, Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that those who constantly utilize the Lord's gift of water without feeling gratitude or offering it back to Him in sacrifice are simply acting as thieves and rogues.

  • The Cosmic Resting Place: The Supreme Lord, Nārāyaṇa (Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu), rests upon the garbha water, from which the entire universal structure manifests.
  • The Stage for Incarnations: Water serves as the arena for the magnificent pastimes of Lord Matsya (the fish) and Lord Varāha (the boar).
  • The Element of Devotion: In the spiritual realm of Vṛndāvana, water is fully conscious and serves the Lord, and in the material world, it is a primary ingredient for Deity worship.
  • The Necessity of Gratitude: Water is a free gift from God essential for all life, and utilizing it without acknowledging the Supreme Lord is considered thievery.
