Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the ultimate purpose of human life is to go back to Godhead and resume our eternal relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. While many people approach God in temples or churches to mitigate material distress or fulfill economic needs—practices which are considered pious and far better than atheism—pure devotional service transcends all material desire. To actually enter the kingdom of God and associate with Lord Kṛṣṇa personally, one must transcend the material body and mind and regain a spiritual form. This transformation is achieved through the process of bhakti-yoga, which acts like a swift arrow directed toward the Supreme Lord. By taking shelter of the spiritual master, following the instructions of the Lord situated in the heart, and focusing one's desires entirely on divine service, the soul can bridge the gap between the material and spiritual worlds and attain its true, eternal destination.

  • The Superiority of Theistic Faith: Approaching God for material necessities is a pious beginning that is far more advanced than the state of those who never recognize the Lord.
  • Transcending Material Desire: While asking God for "daily bread" is a recognized religious start, the higher standard of bhakti involves going to God solely to offer service without selfish motives.
  • The Necessity of a Spiritual Body: Just as one needs a specific body to live in water, one must regain a spiritual body to enter and live in the kingdom of God.
  • The Direct Path of Bhakti: Devotional service is the most direct and scientific method to go to God, surpassing impersonal realization and mystic yoga.
  • The Role of the Representative: Respect and offerings given to the spiritual master go directly to God, as the guru acts as the Lord's authorized tax collector.
