Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that within the material world, the concepts of good and bad are merely mental concoctions based on the dualities of sense perception. Because everything material is temporary and subject to the modes of nature, what one person considers good may be perceived as bad by another. Furthermore, any fruitive activity, whether considered pious or sinful, binds the living entity to the cycle of birth and death through the strict laws of karma. True goodness is absolute and is defined solely by what satisfies the Supreme Lord, Kṛṣṇa. A transcendentalist acts without attachment to mundane results, performing all duties as an offering to God. The ultimate goal of life is not to achieve a "good" material body or temporary elevation to heavenly planets, but to transcend these dualities completely and return back home, back to Godhead.

  • The Illusion of Duality: In the material world, designations of good and bad are meaningless mental speculations; they are simply relative perceptions of temporary conditions.
  • The Bondage of Karma: Both good and bad fruitive activities contaminate the soul, forcing the living entity to accept another material body to enjoy or suffer the reactions.
  • The Absolute Standard: True goodness is not defined by human ethics or morality, but strictly by whether an action satisfies the desires of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • The Spiritual Platform: A Kṛṣṇa conscious person transcends worldly dualities by executing all duties on behalf of the Lord, remaining completely unattached to the material results.
  • The Ultimate Goal: The Lord does not want the living entity to be entangled in either good or bad material reactions; His only desire is for the conditioned soul to return to the spiritual world.
