Theme Analysis

In the quest for spiritual truth, one cannot rely on mental speculation or modern invention. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that real knowledge must be received from authorized sources. Manu is identified as one of the twelve mahājanas—the great authorities on the science of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Along with personalities like Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva, and Nārada Muni, Manu is an agent of the Supreme Lord authorized to propagate the principles of religion. These authorities are qualified not by their material status, but by their strict obedience to the Supreme Personality of Godhead and their performance of great austerities.

  • The Twelve Mahājanas: The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (6.3.20) lists twelve primary authorities: Svayambhū (Brahmā), Nārada, Śambhu (Śiva), the Kumāras, Kapila, Manu, Prahlāda, Janaka, Bhīṣma, Bali, Śukadeva Gosvāmī, and Yamarāja.
  • Manu's Position: Manu is the progenitor of mankind and a lawgiver. His instructions (Manu-saṁhitā) are accepted unanimously by followers of the Vedas.
  • No Speculation: Religion (dharma) is enacted by God (bhagavat-praṇītam). No one can manufacture it. One must follow the path traversed by these great authorities (mahājano yena gataḥ sa panthāḥ).
  • Qualification of Authority: These personalities are famous because they are stalwart devotees. Despite their power, they never disobey the orders of the Supreme Lord.
