Theme Analysis

The term "metaphysical" refers to knowledge that exists beyond the physical realm. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that while European scholars often label Sāṅkhya philosophy as metaphysics, the Vedic understanding goes beyond mere theoretical speculation. The Vedas contain a comprehensive body of knowledge covering both physical and metaphysical subjects. However, empirical philosophical research often leads only to dry, impersonal knowledge because it fails to reach the Supreme Person. True metaphysical wisdom (jñāna) must be paired with realized scientific knowledge (vijñāna) to reach the Absolute Truth. Ultimately, Kṛṣṇa is identified as the "master of all the worlds' metaphysical philosophy" because He is the supreme cause of all causes.

  • Beyond the Physical: Empirical research can distinguish metaphysical subjects from physical objects, but without realizing the Personal Godhead, this knowledge remains dry and impersonal.
  • Sāṅkhya as Metaphysics: The analytical study of material elements (Sāṅkhya) is considered metaphysics. Lord Kapila, an incarnation of God, is the original expounder of this science.
  • Fact vs. Theory: Unlike mundane metaphysics which relies on speculation, Vedic truths presented by authorities like Śukadeva Gosvāmī are factual descriptions of reality.
  • The Supreme Master: Kṛṣṇa is the ultimate master of all philosophy. He imparts the confidential knowledge of the Bhagavad-gītā, which encompasses both metaphysical wisdom and scientific application.
