Theme Analysis

The central teaching of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the revelation of the living entity's true identity, known as the natural constitutional position. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that every living being—regardless of species or nationality—is an eternal part and parcel of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because the part is meant to serve the whole, just as a hand serves the entire body, the natural position of the soul is to render transcendental loving service to Lord Kṛṣṇa. We are constitutionally designed to be controlled and predominated by the Supreme Lord.

Material existence is simply the forgetfulness of this natural position. When the living entity rebels against its subordinate status and artificially tries to become the master, controller, or enjoyer, it falls into illusion. Śrīla Prabhupāda compares this state to madness; a deranged brain is not the natural condition of a human being, just as serving the illusory energy (māyā) is not the natural condition of the soul. By forgetting the service of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, the conditioned soul is forced to serve the dictates of its own material senses, resulting in endless suffering.

The process of bhakti-yoga is the ultimate cure for this madness. It is not an artificial method of religious proselytizing, but a practical cleansing process that removes the corroding dust of material desires. By practicing devotional service, the living entity is gradually purified of all unnatural attractions. Once the senses are aimed back at the Supreme Lord, the soul is restored to its uncovered, natural position. In this liberated state, the devotee remains eternally happy, free from petty materialism, and fully absorbed in the joy of eternal life.

  • The Part and the Whole: The natural position of the living entity is to serve the Supreme Lord, just as a finger naturally acts in the interest of the complete body.
  • The Madness of Independence: Forgetting one's subordination to God and attempting to become the controller is an artificial, deranged state that leads to material suffering.
  • The Purificatory Process: Kṛṣṇa consciousness cleanses the soul of unnatural material attachments, restoring the living entity to its original, uncovered position.
  • Eternal Happiness: Perfection and eternal life are achieved only when one is fully situated in their natural constitutional position of unalloyed devotional service.
