Category:Nature of the Absolute Truth
Theme Analysis
The highest inquiry of human life, as presented in the Vedānta-sūtra, is athāto brahma jijñāsā: What is the nature of the Absolute Truth? The immediate answer given by the Vedic literature is janmādy asya yataḥ, meaning the Absolute Truth is the original source from whom everything emanates. Śrīla Prabhupāda constantly emphasizes that this original source is not a dead, mechanical force or a formless void. The Absolute Truth is fully cognizant (abhijñaḥ) and living. Furthermore, the Vedas define the nature of the Supreme as ānandamayo 'bhyāsāt—He is by nature the reservoir of unlimited pleasure and auspicious qualities.
Understanding this personal, blissful nature of the Absolute Truth is impossible for those who rely on mental speculation. The Māyāvāda school of philosophy and other speculative empiricists may acquire some theoretical knowledge of the impersonal Brahman, but they are entirely unable to reveal the esoteric and personal aspects of the Supreme Being. As long as a person's senses and intelligence are contaminated by material energy, the true transcendental nature and form of the Personality of Godhead remain completely hidden from their view, even if they speculate for thousands of years.
The complete revelation of the Absolute Truth is accessible only through Kṛṣṇa consciousness. The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam systematically trains the reader to understand the transcendental nature of the Absolute Truth before introducing the intimate pastimes of the Lord. When a devotee purifies their senses through bhakti-yoga, they can perfectly realize that there is no difference between Lord Kṛṣṇa and His holy name, form, or pastimes. By studying the localized sun globe and its pervasive sunshine, the pure devotee easily understands how the Absolute Person resides in Goloka Vṛndāvana while His energies sustain the entire cosmic manifestation.
- The Origin of Everything: The Vedānta-sūtra defines the Absolute Truth as the living, cognizant source from whom all creations emanate.
- The Reservoir of Pleasure: The supreme nature of the Absolute Truth is ānandamaya, full of eternal bliss, exhibiting personal desires and energies.
- The Limits of Speculation: Speculative philosophers and Māyāvādīs, due to material contamination, cannot understand the personal feature of the Absolute Truth.
- Purification Through Devotion: Only through the purified senses engaged in bhakti-yoga can one fully appreciate the absolute nature of Kṛṣṇa and His non-different holy name.
