Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies a fundamental truth of material existence: the living entity actually has no control. Covered by illusion, we falsely think we are independent actors, but we are simply being tossed by the waves of material nature. We have no control over the mind, the senses, natural disasters, disease, or the specific body we are forced to accept in our next life. The stringent laws of material nature dictate all these outcomes. Furthermore, human society lacking the spiritual training to control the senses descends into chaotic, animalistic behavior. The only true controller is the Supreme Lord, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and those acting as His empowered agents. Therefore, the only way to escape the misery of the uncontrollable material ocean is to stop pretending to be the master, properly utilize our minute independence, and fully surrender to Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

  • The Illusion of Independence: Rascals and demonic speculators falsely believe there is no supreme controller and that they are entirely independent, leading them to act whimsically without any control over their senses.
  • Controlled by the Modes of Nature: Despite our grand plans, we are strictly under the grip of material nature. Our activities are automatically recorded, and we are forced by the laws of nature to accept our next body.
  • Powerless Against Miseries: We have absolutely no control over the threefold miseries—specifically adhidaivika-kleśa, which includes natural disasters like snowstorms, earthquakes, famines, and the actions of the demigods.
  • The Necessity of Sense Control: True yoga means indriya-saṃyama, or controlling the senses. A civilization or individual with no control over sex life or eating habits is considered fourth-class and cannot achieve liberation.
  • The Supreme Controller: While there are many subordinate controllers (īśvaras) in the universe, Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Īśvara. He has no controller above Him, and even the formidable material nature (Durgā) acts under His direction.
