Theme Analysis

While Śrīla Prabhupāda’s speaking was the source of the movement, the "speaking" of his disciples was the method of its expansion. This category provides a masterclass in the art of preaching, emphasizing that a disciple need not be a great scholar to be effective—they must simply be a faithful repeater. Śrīla Prabhupāda instructed his followers to "digest" the philosophy found in his books and then speak it in their own words without adulteration. This analysis covers the qualifications of a speaker, the necessity of boldness in exposing "bogus" ideas, and the standard process of presenting Kṛṣṇa consciousness to the world.

  • The "Parrot" Principle: The primary qualification for a disciple is to "hear and repeat." Śrīla Prabhupāda warned against manufacturing new ideas, stating that one simply becomes a guru by repeating what Kṛṣṇa has said.
  • Digesting the Purports: To speak fluently, disciples were advised to "cram" (memorize) and digest the purports of Prabhupāda's books. Once the philosophy is assimilated, a preacher can speak for hours without difficulty.
  • Universal Qualification: Preaching is not limited by gender or physical ability. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirmed that if a woman can lecture nicely, she should be heard, and that even a "dumb man" can become an orator by the grace of the guru.
  • Boldness and Logic: Disciples are instructed to be bold. If challenged by "bogus" men or opposing philosophies, they must speak loudly and expose the illusion, using logic and authoritative evidence from the śāstra.
  • Speaking as Service: The tongue has two functions: tasting prasādam and speaking about Kṛṣṇa. By engaging the tongue in these two activities, the disciple conquers the senses and performs perfect kīrtana.
