Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that true peacefulness is a natural symptom of a pure devotee of the Lord. While mental speculators, impersonalists, and mystic yogis struggle to find real satisfaction because they still harbor subtle desires, a pure devotee has no material hankering whatsoever. By depending entirely on the lotus feet of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and acting without attachment or hatred, the devotee remains completely unagitated by the modes of passion and ignorance. This perfect, desireless state allows the devotee to live blissfully and peacefully even within the material world, guaranteeing their ultimate return back home, back to Godhead.

  • The Symptom of Pure Devotion: A pure devotee automatically develops godly qualities such as kindness, truthfulness, and magnanimity. Peacefulness is a primary feature of these transcendental attributes.
  • Freedom from Material Desire: The root of all agitation is material desire. Because devotees have no desire for sense gratification or even impersonal liberation, they remain in a state of perfect peace.
  • Dependence on the Supreme Lord: True peace comes from total surrender. Just as a child feels secure depending on a parent, a devotee feels complete tranquility by depending on the mercy of Kṛṣṇa.
  • Stability Amidst Material Influence: Devotees are described as the most intelligent class of men because they remain uninfluenced by passion and ignorance. This stability allows them to live without care or anxiety even while present in the material world.
