Theme Analysis

The profound Sāṅkhya philosophy regarding the energetic principle forms the foundation of this category. Through these teachings, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies the absolute distinction between the supreme enjoyer and the enjoyed. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, is the original puruṣa, or the supreme male, whereas all His energies—both the material elements and the conscious living entities—are classified as prakṛti, or the female principle. By understanding this divine relationship, the living entity can abandon the false desire to lord over material nature and return to their original, joyful position as an eternal servant.

  • The Supreme Male Principle: The Supreme Lord is the only true enjoyer and the energetic source of everything, eternally situated as the original puruṣa.
  • The Material Elements as Female: The external world, consisting of earth, water, fire, and mind, represents the inferior material energy, which is inert and entirely controlled as prakṛti.
  • The Living Entity as the Superior Energy: Though conscious, the jīva is constitutionally female and meant to be enjoyed by the Lord, rendering the concept of merging to become one with the supreme male impossible.
  • The Illusion of Material Gender: Temporary bodily designations of man and woman are merely external dresses; in spiritual reality, every conditioned soul is originally prakṛti and under the control of the supreme puruṣa.
  • The Supreme Husband: Kṛṣṇa acts as the ultimate protector, maintainer, and husband for all living entities, while the living beings find absolute peace by accepting their subordinate, female position.
  • The Perfection of Devotion: True spiritual bliss is awakened when the individual soul stops trying to exploit matter and actively cooperates with the supreme puruṣa in a mood of loving servitude.
