Theme Analysis
In the material world, the living entity is bombarded by a multitude of cravings, most of which are imposed by the body and mind. Śrīla Prabhupāda identifies these as "artificial" or "other" desires. In contrast, "real desire" stems from the soul's constitutional position. This category draws a sharp distinction between the two. Real desire is characterized by the longing for eternal life, full intelligence, and the service of Kṛṣṇa. Artificial desire is characterized by animalistic propensities—eating, sleeping, mating, and defending—or the subtle ambition for cheap fame (pratiṣṭhāśā). The perfection of human life lies not in killing desire, but in distinguishing the real from the illusory.
- The Nature of the Soul: Because the soul is eternal and conscious, desire is its inseparable symptom. To be desireless is impossible; one must simply choose between bona fide desires and foolish ones.
- Human vs. Animal Desire: Śrīla Prabhupāda contrasts "desiring like a dog" (sense gratification) with "desiring like a human" (spiritual realization). Only the latter is considered real desire.
- The Object of Real Desire: The soul naturally yearns for eternity, knowledge, and bliss. Since these cannot be found in the material world, real desire ultimately targets the transcendental service of the Lord.
- The Trap of Imitation: A subtle form of artificial desire is the craving for prestige. One may imitate a great saint like Haridāsa Ṭhākura outwardly, but if the inner motive is name and fame, the desire is false.
