Theme Analysis

"Real human life" is a specific status of consciousness characterized by regulation, inquiry, and a connection with the Supreme. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently contrasts this with "animal life," which is driven solely by the senses. A society without the structure of varṇāśrama-dharma (dividing society by quality and work) and without the goal of apavarga (liberation) is not considered a human society but a polished animal society. The perfection of human life lies in conquering birth and death by understanding Kṛṣṇa, and its highest duty is para-upakāra—acting for the welfare of others by spreading this knowledge.

  • Regulation and Dharma: Human life is meant for regulative principles. Without religion and the social structure of varṇāśrama, there is no difference between a man and a dog.
  • Inquiry into the Absolute: Real life begins with the question athāto brahma jijñāsā—"Why am I suffering?" Those who do not ask this remain in darkness.
  • Conquering Death: The real mission of human life is to solve the problem of repeated birth and death (tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti).
  • Compassion (Para-upakāra): Following Lord Caitanya, a real human being works to save others from ignorance, proving that this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is the real civilization.
