Theme Analysis

The word yoga is widely misused in modern times, often reduced to gymnastic exercises aimed at improving physical health, losing weight, or acquiring mystical powers. The Vedic literature, however, defines yoga as the process of linking the individual soul with the Supreme Soul. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while there are various systems like karma-yoga, jñāna-yoga, and aṣṭānga-yoga, they are merely stepping stones. The real, ultimate yoga system is bhakti-yoga—unalloyed devotional service. True perfection in yoga is achieved not by sitting in seclusion, but by actively engaging the senses in the service of the Lord and fixing the mind constantly on Kṛṣṇa, ensuring liberation from the material body.

  • Focusing on the Supreme Form: The actual purpose of controlling the mind and senses is to concentrate exclusively on the four-handed form of Lord Viṣṇu or Kṛṣṇa within the heart.
  • Rejecting Superficial Gymnastics: Engaging in yoga merely for bodily fitness, profit, or sensory pleasure is a perversion of the science; true yoga aims at ridding oneself of the material body entirely.
  • The Culmination in Bhakti: While various paths of yoga exist, the ultimate and only practical process for this age is bhakti-yoga, which directly revives our loving connection with God.
  • The Ultimate Perfection: The final test of a successful yogi is the ability to remember the Supreme Lord at the time of death, thereby transferring the soul to the spiritual planets.
