Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the fundamental qualification for understanding the Absolute Truth is to "remain submissive to Kṛṣṇa." Unlike material knowledge, which can be conquered by intellect and research, spiritual knowledge is a matter of revelation. Kṛṣṇa is not an order-supplier who appears on command; He reveals Himself only to those who approach Him with humility and love.

This submissive attitude is the dividing line between the devotee and the impersonalist (Māyāvādī). While the impersonalist tries to dominate the scripture through grammatical jugglery, the devotee submits to the instruction of the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that by submissively hearing about Kṛṣṇa—whether His instructions in the Bhagavad-gītā or His pastimes with the gopīs—the heart is cleansed of lust, and the devotee receives dictation from the Supersoul within.

  • Revelation over Force: One cannot see Kṛṣṇa by force; one must wait for His revelation through submission.
  • The Power of Hearing: Submissively hearing Kṛṣṇa's pastimes cures the material disease of lust.
  • The Devotee's Prayer: The proper mood is to admit one's poverty of understanding and beg for mercy.
  • Internal Guidance: A submissive devotee is guided by the Supersoul from within and the spiritual master from without.
  • The Great Divide: Submission distinguishes the Kṛṣṇa-ite from the speculative Māyāvādī.
