Category:That Is Knowledge

Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category defines what truly constitutes knowledge according to the Vedic perspective. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that modern education, which focuses exclusively on the temporary material body, technological advancement, or political maneuvering, is actually ignorance. True knowledge (jñāna) begins with self-realization: the firm conviction that one is an eternal spirit soul and not the material body. From this platform of self-realization, perfect knowledge expands to understanding the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa, as the ultimate source and proprietor of everything. This absolute knowledge cannot be acquired through blunt material senses or speculative dissection; it must be received by faithfully hearing from an authoritative spiritual master (ācārya). Ultimately, true knowledge culminates in understanding our eternal relationship with Kṛṣṇa and acting accordingly to conquer the cycle of birth and death.

  • Self-Realization is the Beginning: Real knowledge starts with the understanding that we are eternal spirit souls, separate from the temporary, changing material body, and that we must prepare for our next life.
  • Understanding the Supreme Proprietor: All branches of learning—whether mathematical, scientific, or philosophical—are useless if they do not lead to a clear conception of God and the realization that everything emanates from and belongs to Him.
  • Receiving from the Right Source: Perfect knowledge is beyond the reach of the blunt material senses. It must be acquired through the descending process (śruti), by taking shelter of a bona fide spiritual master who receives and distributes the message of Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Platform of Goodness: True knowledge awakens when one is situated in the mode of goodness, where the illusions of temporary material attachments are removed, and things are seen clearly as they are.
