Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category defines what is truly "natural" for the living entity, contrasting the soul's original spiritual nature with its conditioned material tendencies. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the constitutional, eternal nature of the soul is to be fully dependent on and serve the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, in a state of eternal joy. Because the soul is eternal, it naturally desires to avoid death, old age, and suffering; it inherently seeks pleasure and connection. However, when the soul falls into the material world, these pure natural instincts are pervertedly reflected as the struggle for existence, material attachments, sex desire, and the urge to lord over material nature. The process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is not an artificial imposition but the purification of the senses, restoring the living entity to its original, blissful, and natural life of unalloyed devotional service.

  • The Constitutional Position of Service: It is the eternal, inescapable nature of the living entity to serve. Serving God is the original, natural position, while attempting to be independent or serve the material senses leads to suffering.
  • The Inherent Desire for Pleasure and Immortality: Because the soul is eternally blissful (ānanda) and immortal, it is completely natural for human beings to constantly seek pleasure and deeply fear death, old age, and disease.
  • The Perverted Reflection of Material Life: Material tendencies—such as the attraction between sexes, the desire to protect oneself, and attachment to home—are not artificial but are perverted reflections of the pure relationships that exist eternally in the spiritual world.
  • The Stringent Laws of Nature: Material nature operates under strict, inescapable laws. It is completely natural that one who associates with lower modes of nature will inevitably receive a lower birth or suffer consequences, just as touching fire naturally causes burns.
  • The Restoration of Purified Senses: Kṛṣṇa consciousness is not an artificial religious dogma. It is the process of purifying the senses. When the senses are used for God's purpose rather than personal gratification, the living entity returns to its completely natural, joyful life.
