Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category fiercely redefines the true meaning of religion by exposing what it is not. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that religion is not a mere faith that can be changed, nor is it a manufactured set of rituals designed to improve one's material condition. Furthermore, any so-called religious system that lacks a clear conception of the Supreme Lord, encourages animal killing, or serves as a cloak for sense gratification is completely rejected as a cheating religion (kaitava-dharma). True religion (dharma) is the eternal, inseparable characteristic of the soul. It consists solely of the laws given directly by God (dharmam tu sākṣād bhagavat-praṇītam) and culminates in understanding, loving, and fully surrendering to Kṛṣṇa. Anything that deviates from this absolute goal is not religion, but rather an illusion that fails to elevate the living entity from material bondage.

  • Rejecting Changeable Faith: Religion is not a temporary faith or a designation (e.g., Hindu, Muslim, Christian) that one can change at whim. True dharma is the eternal, inseparable nature of the soul.
  • Dismissing Man-Made Dogma: No human being can create religious principles. Any system manufactured by mental speculation, or any philosophy that accepts all paths as equal (yata mat tata pat), is not religion.
  • The Necessity of Knowing God: A religion without a clear conception of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is a farce. If one does not know who God is, it is impossible to love Him, and therefore, such a system is not religion.
  • Condemning Animal Killing and Fanaticism: Any religious system that allows unrestricted animal killing (paśu-ghātam) or lacks discrimination in foodstuff is merely barbarism and fanaticism masquerading as religion.
  • Against Material Motives: Religion is not meant for improving one's material condition, satisfying the senses, or achieving political ends. Such motivations render the practice a cheating religion.
  • The Ultimate Definition: The only true religion is to know, love, and fully surrender to Kṛṣṇa (sarva-dharmān parityajya). Any process that fails to teach this surrender is not religion.
