Theme Analysis

In the vocabulary of Śrīla Prabhupāda, the term "rascal" is a precise designation for those who are in the mode of ignorance and defiance. The primary thought of a rascal is the rejection of God's supremacy. They think, "I am God," or "I am independent." This mentality is termed pāṣaṇḍī. Rascals misconceive the Deity form of the Lord (arcā-mūrti) as a stone idol and consider the transcendental vibration of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra to be material sound. Scientific rascals like Darwin propose that life comes from matter or chance, while political rascals think they can improve society without God. Fundamentally, the rascal identifies the self with the body ("skin disease") and thinks that death is the end of existence. Despite being kicked by māyā at every step, they stubbornly maintain the illusion that they are free.

  • The "I am God" Delusion: Rascals imitate Kṛṣṇa or claim to be avatars. They think that by mystic yoga or meditation, they can become the Supreme.
  • Materialistic Science: Atheistic rascals think creation happens by chance or through the interaction of matter, denying the energetic source, Para-brahman.
  • False Independence: Rascals think they are free to do anything, not realizing they are tightly bound by the stringent laws of material nature.
  • Spiritual Blindness: They view the Deity as a doll and the holy name as ordinary sound. They equate the Supreme Lord with the demigods.
